Thousands of pages of secret information about Facebook have been crawled by American media houses.
The document leak “Facebook papers” consists of internal company information from the giant in social media. It comes from whistleblowers and former product manager at Facebook, Frances Haugen, who has previously also shared large amounts of documents with the newspaper The Wall Street Journal.
The news agency AP is one of 17 American media houses that have now examined the material from Haugen, and on Monday they began at the same time as publishing what they have found. In addition, journalists at a group of European media houses have examined the material in parallel.
The documents show, among other things, that Facebook has for several years known about systematic problems in the moderation work, without doing much to correct it.
In addition, the revelations show that the technology company Apple two years ago threatened Facebook and Instagram with removing their apps from the App Store, because the platform was used as a tool to sell domestic workers.
The various media houses that are involved in the leak will publish cases continuously in the next few days, the AP informs. Each media house has made independent assessments and its own priorities in how they cover the case.
Whistleblower Frances Haugen testified earlier this month in the US Congress. Among other things, she claimed that Facebook’s products are harmful to children.
