An American spent nearly 10 hours locked in a New York jewelry safe on the night of October 24-25. Despite the intervention of emergency services, he was only able to come out in the early morning.

Anguished night in New York for this young man. An American spent an entire night stuck in a jewelry safe, the channel reported this Wednesday, October 25 ABC News. This owner of one of the safes located in the heart of Manhattan was only able to get out in the early morning.

Shortly before 8 p.m., this Tuesday, October 24, the 23-year-old young man, who entered the strong room, was trapped by the automatic closing of the room as he came to check his safe, our American colleagues tell us. The building, known as the World Diamond Tower, houses several jewelry businesses including several individual jewelry vaults.

A 30 centimeter thick wall to cut

In the middle of the night, firefighters intervened to try to extricate the young man by partially cutting a wall of the vault. After several hours of cutting the concrete wall by around thirty centimeters, the emergency services quickly found themselves faced with a dilemma. An armored metal plate appeared during the destruction, requiring it to be cut using a blowtorch.

But to avoid any dispersion of toxic smoke in the room, the emergency services preferred to abort their intervention and wait for the door to open automatically. Equipped with a timer, the latter was programmed to unlock in the early morning.

So at around 6:15 a.m., the man was able to leave the scene free. New York Fire Chief John Sarrocco was unable to explain how the young man became trapped inside the vault, writes the British daily The Guardian.
