New York: Paul Alexander, an American lawyer and polio survivor who lived with an iron lung for 70 years, has passed away. Alexander, also known as Polio Paul, contracted polio at the age of six. He was one of the last people to live in an iron lung. Due to polio, Paul could only move his head, neck and mouth. Thus he was forced to live inside a 600-pound metal structure.
Polio hit the US in 1952. Hundreds of children around Dallas, Texas, including Alexander, were then taken to the hospital. There he was treated in the iron lung ward. Doctors realized that Paul was unable to breathe on his own. Alexander also holds the Guinness World Records for the person who spent the longest time in an iron lung. Meanwhile, Paul continued his studies and became a lawyer and writer.
