American Killer Behind Bars Almost Fifty Years After Escape | NOW

The FBI arrested a man on Thursday who had been on the run for nearly 50 years, the organization Friday (local time). Leonard Rayne Moses, sentenced to life, escaped on June 1, 1971, during his grandmother’s funeral in Pennsylvania.

Moses was arrested in Michigan “without any difficulty” on Thursday, the FBI said. He is being returned to Pennsylvania pending his case.

The US police never gave details of exactly how Moses escaped. Among other things, he would have assumed a different identity during his decades-long flight. Since 1999, Moses has lived in Michigan, working under a newly assumed identity as an itinerant pharmacist.

Michigan police arrested Moses in October for an unknown offense. His fingerprints were taken and entered into the FBI’s system, matching the fingerprints taken during his arrest in 1968.

The now 68-year-old Moses has been found guilty of the murder of a woman during the Pittsburgh riots in 1968. He and some friends threw Molotov cocktails at a house in a neighborhood in the city, which caught fire. A woman present in the house was seriously injured and died of her injuries shortly afterwards.
