NORTH CAROLINA, USA (Nettavisen): American journalist Evan Gershkovich started covering Russia for the Moscow Times newspaper in 2017.
After several years at the newspaper, he changed employers to Agence France-Presse in 2020. In January 2022, he had secured his dream job as Russia correspondent at The Wall Street Journal, where he works today.
But in the past year, he has missed several news, birthday celebrations, football matches and other events.
On March 29, 2023, he was arrested. He was on his way to meet a source at a restaurant when the Federal Security Service of Russia (FSB) arrested him.

Gershkovich is charged with espionage.
– There is no reason to believe that he has committed espionage. It is constructed. This is pure kidnapping, says Civita adviser Eirik Løkke to Nettavisen.
Nevertheless, Gershkovich could face many years in prison, the US expert points out.
– What is certain is that Gershkovich’s fate is uncertain, says Løkke.

President Biden wrote in a press release that they will continue to work every day for Gershkovich’s release.
