The American jazz pianist and composer Chick Corea passed away on Tuesday at the age of 79 reported on his official Facebook page. The iconic pianist and band leader, who played a major role in the innovation of jazz music in the 1970s, was suffering from cancer.
In his career Corea has worked with jazz greats such as trumpet player Miles Davis, pianist Herbie Hancock and bassist Stanley Clarke.
In the early 1970s, Corea contributed to the emergence of fusion, a progressive movement in jazz music, among other things with his work for Davis and the group Return to Forever, which he founded himself. Particularly is his own compositions Spain very well known.
Corea has died of a rare cancer that was recently discovered in him. “Throughout his life and career, Chick enjoyed the freedom and pleasure he had when creating something new,” read the statement announcing his death.
