The American ice hockey player Adam Johnson (29), with a past in Swedish Malmö and the NHL club Pittsburgh Penguins, died after a bizarre accident during a match for the British Nottingham Panthers on Saturday.
Johnson was hit in the neck by a skate during the match, when an opponent accidentally raised his foot after another duel.
Television images show how a linesman immediately made contact with the 29-year-old, who stood up briefly on the ice before collapsing again. He was tried to be led off the field at the same time as the blood gushed from the neck region, but eventually lay down.
Teammates must have gathered around him and shielded the player while attempts were made to provide life-saving first aid. according to The Sun his girlfriend must also have been present at the match.

The Guardian journalist Christian Bennett was at the match. He recounts shocking scenes.
– It’s one of the ugliest things I’ve seen on a sports pitch, says Bennett own newspaper.
The fight was stopped after the shock incident and the crowd was asked to leave the hall while efforts were made to save Johnson’s life. Around 8,000 spectators are said to have been in the stands.
– It was basically a real family atmosphere… everyone was crying, says Bennett.
He says that children “wept uncontrollably” over what they had witnessed.
Dane Markus Lauridsen played with Johnson for a few months in Malmö.
– Yes, it is tragic. We were teammates for three or four months, and he was a quiet and calm guy, who was nice to be with, says Lauridsen to Extra Magazine.
– That he has tragically passed away after an accident on the ice is shocking. My thoughts go out to his family and friends, he continues.

“Nottingham Panthers are devastated to announce that Adam Johnson has tragically passed away following a freak accident during a match in Sheffield last night,” read a statement from the Nottingham Panthers club.
The club also writes that its thoughts are with Johnson’s closest relatives in this difficult time.
“Everyone at the club, including players, staff, support staff and owners are devastated by the news of Adam’s passing,” the message also says.
The English league has decided to postpone all Sunday’s matches as a result of the tragic death.
It happens that players get serious cuts as a result of skating in ice hockey, but it is rare that it ends as fatally as this Saturday.
