When American Horror Story: Delicate Part 2 returns to screens, the horror anthology series must explain a bizarre motive for the show’s viral marketing campaign. Every season of American Horror Story features strange symbolism in its advertising. Season 7’s Cult used images of bees and clowns to hint at the season’s thematic concern with political hive minds and online trolling. Likewise, the opening credits of season 3, Coven, foreground images of goats, hooded figures, and occult symbols to tease the season’s focus on witchcraft. American Horror Story: Delicate is no different, as images associated with pregnancy dominate its marketing.
Trailers, posters, and opening credits for American Horror Story: Delicate featured cribs, syringes, operating tables, and other items traditionally associated with pregnancy and parenthood. As always, these elements were moodily lit and frighteningly presented, foreshadowing all the thrills and chills viewers have come to expect from American Horror Story: Delicate. However, a coherent image seemed strangely incongruous. All marketing for the season heavily featured spider motifs. Kim Kardashian’s Siobhan and Emma Roberts’ Anna were photographed pregnant with giant spiders as arachnids and webs flooded the rest of the show’s marketing. So far it is unclear why.

The posters/marketing for the release feature many images of spiders, but spiders did not appear on screen in the story of American Horror Story: Delicate. The series needs to clarify what the motif was meant to represent, either through literal spiders appearing on screen during the season or through a metaphorical reveal. Given that Anna seems to be surrounded by people she can’t trust, she’s arguably caught in a figurative spider’s web. However, since only some of his associates seem downright predatory, this analogy is not so clear. Siobhan certainly appears to be a spider for Anna’s fly, but Dex’s role is less clear.

It’s clear that everyone around Anna is involved in something, but it’s not yet clear exactly what the plot is. As such, American Horror Story: Delicate has vaguely justified its spider imagery, but the series still needs a firmer explanation of the motif. Anna’s husband Dex appears to be lying to her about his late wife, but he’s certainly not in cahoots with Siobhan. Likewise, American Horror Story: Delicate episode 5, “Preech,” revealed that Mrs. Preecher was trying to warn Anna about the shady cult that wanted her baby. Until now, it seemed that Preecher was part of this cult.
Until American Horror Story: Delicate clarifies where everyone’s allegiances lie, the show’s spider motif won’t make much sense. As it stands, Anna isn’t so much caught in a metaphorical web as she is in a busy intersection with a dozen exits. Her allies and enemies are unclear, with minor supporting characters like Sonia and Nicolette acting strangely around her but never clarifying their allegiance. Siobhan appears to be the mastermind of something terrible, but she openly dislikes Dex. This makes it difficult to tell whether he is a heroic figure or simply another antagonist who has divergent goals from Siobhan’s.
