Within a few minutes of receiving the vaccine, the first symptoms were felt. First the shortness of breath, then the fast heart rate and a skin irritation The reaction forced the American health professional to spend a night in the hospital under observation.
The case of an allergic reaction to the Pfizer vaccine, which has now begun to be administered in the United States, is the first in the country, although two others have been registered in the United Kingdom. None of this came as a surprise to doctors, who later revealed they were already waiting for the occasional reaction.
“We hoped that side effects of this kind could happen, after reports of anaphylaxis arrived from England, after some people had shown symptoms after receiving the Pfizer vaccine for Covid-10,” said Anne Zink, Alaska’s medical director.
As soon as the symptoms were detected, the American was treated with antihistamine. Only when he started feeling short of breath did he have to be transported to the nearest hospital emergency room.
Afraid that the patient could go into anaphylaxis – the most severe form of allergic reaction that can lead to death – he was given an injection of epinephrine, the appropriate treatment in these risk situations. The effects were immediate.
“About one in a million people who get a vaccine can have a severe allergic reaction. What we have to find out now is what could be causing this type of reaction, ”explains Paul Offit, a member of the FDA, an American entity that regulates the entry of drugs into the country, to CNN.
