Kidnapped by her mother six years ago, a young American has just been found thanks to an episode of a series broadcast on Netflix.
Kayla Unbehaun, 15, owes her salvation to a total stranger who is a fan of documentary series. Kidnapped by her mother in 2017, she was recognized last Saturday thanks to the broadcast, on Netflix, of an episode of “Extraordinary Investigations” devoted to her story.
The teenager’s father, Ryan Iserka, had been looking for his daughter for six years. He had sole custody in 2017, when she disappeared after a visit to her mother, Heather Unbehaun. The latter had taken Kayla, 9 years old at the time, for a camping trip from which they never returned.
According to CNNan arrest warrant for kidnapping had been issued on July 28, 2017. But, since then, despite the mobilization of Ryan Iserka and his relatives, the young Kayla had remained untraceable.
On Saturday, May 13, she was in a store in Asheville, North Carolina, when she was recognized. According to Samantha Booth of the local police department, the witness said he identified the girl after watching the parental abduction episode of the Netflix documentary series “Unsolved mysteries” in the original version. which Kayla appeared.
A new start”
Sure of his discovery, this person immediately informed a store employee, who himself called the police. Heather Unbehaun was arrested and taken into custody, before being released after paying a bond of 250,000 dollars (about 231,000 euros). She is to be tried on July 11.
Kayla has found her father with whom she lives again in Illinois. On the Facebook page he had created to centralize research after the disappearance of his daughter, Ryan Iserka said he was “overjoyed” and thanked all those “who helped bring his story to life”.
Also asking that his privacy be respected so that he can enjoy “this new beginning”, he recalled that after six years without news, Kayla and him needed to “get to know each other again”.
