In the Norsingen district of the community of Ehrenkirchen, the veterinary office of the district of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald officially identified American foulbrood in an apiary.
The affected bee colonies were set up shortly before in the municipality of Glottertal in the local district of Föhrental. The outbreak events therefore also affect this location.
Restricted areas were set up around the affected apiaries by general decree. This affects both parts of Norsingen and Föhrental. Maps of the restricted areas and details of the measures can be found on the website of the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district office at www.lkbh.de/announcements. In the restricted areas, mobile apiaries may not be removed from their location so that the bee plague is not spread. No bee colonies may be brought into the restricted area.
If this has not yet happened, bee colonies in the restricted areas must immediately report the location of the beehives and the number of colonies to the Department of Veterinary Affairs and Food Control of the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald District Office, Sautierstr. 30, 79104 Freiburg, by phone: 0761 2187-3928 or by email to vetamt@lkbh.de.
Info box:
American foulbrood is a notifiable disease of bees. It does not pose a threat to humans, honey can be consumed without hesitation. It is a disease of the bee colony caused by a spore-forming bacterium that only affects the bee brood. Adult bees cannot become ill, but in turn infect the brood. Most of the brood dies with the result that the bee colony becomes weaker and weaker and ultimately no longer has the necessary strength to survive.
