American Football release “Never Meant” remaster and cover version of Iron And Wine

American Football’s legendary debut was released on September 14, 1999. Today, 25 years later, the Midwest emo band is releasing a remastered version of their most-listened-to song “Never Meant,” which is probably exemplary for the entire genre. Last week, American Football had already teased new music with a short clip on social media.

The video clip was very short, but it gave fans hope for a new album: the clip shows the “American Football House”, which can be seen on both the debut album (1999) and the reunion album (2016). The caption promisingly says “Track one” and the date “7.31.2024”, i.e. today, is displayed. It is now clear that this is not (yet) a new album.

Instead, American Football released a kind of split single. The first song on it, which can also be heard in the teaser, is a cover version of Iron And Wine’s “Never Meant”. The accompanying video can be viewed today at 4 p.m. Iron And Wine, aka Sam Beam, released his new album “Light Verse” in April of this year.

The second song on the single – the B-side, so to speak – is a remastered version of the original track “Never Meant”. A physical release has not yet been announced. So it looks like fans will have to wait a little longer for completely new music from the band. However, there have recently been repeated indications that a new album is in the works. Drummer Steve Lamos posted about last night a supposed studio session.

American Football’s current album “LP3” was released in 2019. They released an EP, “Year One Demos,” at the end of 2019. Most recently, the double single “Rare Symmetry / Fade Into You” was released in December 2021.
