Berlin Thunder has clinched an important home win in the European League of Football (ELF). The team of head coach Johnny Schmuck won in an exciting game in front of 3056 spectators in the Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Stadion on Sunday against the Wroclaw Panthers, who had equal points until then, 31:25 (16:17) after extra time. The Berliners are moving up to second place in the Northern Conference.
The Berliners got off to a bad start. The guests from Wroclaw used an interception and a ball loss by quarterback Joe Germinerio in the first two drives for a quick 10-0 lead. Thunder shortened the lead to 6:10 with a touchdown from receiver Robin Wilzek. After a touchdown by Poland, it was again Wilzek and a field goal by Jonas Schenderlein that made it 16:17 at the break.
Then came running back Jocques Crawford, whom the Poles had controlled well so far. He ran into the end zone for a 22:17 lead. The mixture of passing and running game worked a little better for the Berliners. Schenderlein increased it to 25:17 with a field goal. But Wroclaw was able to equalize in the final minute. In the overtime it got dramatic. Both teams initially missed a field goal before Crawford ran into the end zone with his second touchdown to win.
