American Nicholas Rossi has been extradited from Scotland to the United States. The 38-year-old man is suspected of rape in his home country. There he faked his death, after which he was exposed in Scotland.
Authorities put Rossi on a private flight from Edinburgh to the United States on Friday.
Rossi is suspected of several sex crimes in the American states of Utah and Ohio, including one from his student days in 2008. In 2020 he faked his death. At that time he was known as Nicholas Alahverdian and active as a local politician in the state of Rhode Island.
First he announced that he had cancer, shortly afterwards reports appeared in the media that he had died. The American police suspected that he had fled and Interpol issued an international investigation notice.
In 2021, Rossi was recognized by hospital staff at a Scottish hospital by his tattoos. Rossi was there because of a corona infection.
Rossi used four identities
In Scotland, Rossi was known as Arthur Knight, an Irish orphan. But his Scottish marriage certificate was signed with the name Nicholas Brown. Rossi is said to have assumed four different identities over a three-year period in an attempt to deceive American judges.
According to the Scottish judge, the tattoos and fingerprints prove that Knight is the same person as Rossi. The man himself denies this and claims to be a victim of mistaken identity. According to the suspect, the tattoos were done while he was unconscious in the hospital.
The Scottish Supreme Court disagrees. On December 14, Rossi lost his final appeal against deportation to the United States.
