BRATISLAVA – American hockey defenseman Ian Scheid signed a one-year contract with Slovan Bratislava. According to sports director Oto Haščák, he should represent an asset in the team’s offensive activity. The club informed about the new acquisition on the official website.
For Scheid, who will celebrate his 28th birthday in June, it will be his first job in the Slovak extra league. He spent the past two seasons with the Straubing Tigers in Germany’s highest DEL competition. In the year 2022/2023, he had two goals and eight assists in 33 games, previously he had collected 19 points.
“Ian is an offensive-minded defenseman with excellent hockey IQ and mobility. His greatest strengths are skating and playing with the puck. We wanted to complement the defense with this type of defenseman who reads the game excellently and can support the attack in a balanced state. His skills, creativity and excellent we will also use puck control in power plays.Ian plays full-court hockey.
Despite his smaller stature, he is not afraid to play hard in the corners, he can be emphatic even in the area in front of the goal in the defensive zone. For his age, he presented himself with solid numbers in the high-quality AHL and DEL leagues. We believe that he will be an asset mainly in the offensive activities of our defense, for which we engaged him,” stated Hasčák.
Scheid should join the Whites at the end of July, when the main phase of the team’s pre-season training begins. After signing the contract with Scheid, Slovan has eight defenders under contract: Michal Sersen, Michal Beňo, Andrej Golian, Daniel Gachulinec, Ian Scheid, Patrik Maier, Ladislav Romančík and Samuel Fereta.
One defensive-minded defender will be added to the team, and Slovan should inform about his arrival in the next few days.
