Cloe Fields, 23, was driving with her boyfriend Christian Zelada, 24, on the edge of a steep cliff along Monkey Canyon, north of Los Angeles, on Tuesday when another road user honked his horn and tried to surpass the two. Disaster struck when Zelada lost control of her wheel due to gravel on the road.
Los Angeles Police Department footage shows the car crashing into the rock face. Other than a few bruises, some neck pain and a minor concussion, the two were unhurt. There was no coverage in the deep canyon, but thanks to a function on Fields’ iPhone, the two were able to call 911.
Rescuers who took the two to hospital by helicopter said so on Friday The New York Times that such cliffside accidents were always fatal. “We were among those out of 100 million who made it out alive,” Zelada said.
