American corona patient who becomes ‘seriously ill’ is unvaccinated in 99 percent of the cases. Vaccines also appear to protect against the highly contagious delta variant

They’re called “the new 99 percent.” The vast majority of Americans who become seriously ill from the coronavirus have not been vaccinated.

This is according to new figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the highest scientific authority in America, according to The New York Post. Between January 1 and August 30, 99 percent of hospital admissions occurred among unvaccinated people.

The CDC holds the definition that someone is “vaccinated” two weeks after the second dose of Pfizer or Moderna or two weeks after a Janssen vaccination.

A total of 1.6 million Americans have been hospitalized with Covid-19 this year. Only 0.65 percent of those, or 10,471 patients, were fully vaccinated. The numbers confirm the vaccine’s unprecedented effectiveness, at least for a period of time, against serious illness.

Infection

Even against the highly contagious delta variant, the vaccines appear to work well to prevent serious illness. However, they protect much worse than previously thought against infection. People who have been vaccinated are still less likely to get infected, but that’s only a factor of 3, according to previous CDC figures, and a vaccinated person can become just as contagious as an unvaccinated one.

According to experts, ‘breakthrough infections’, in which the virus breaks through the vaccine, are becoming more common, The New York Post writes. Vaccinated people can still infect others. However, one no longer gets sick with a shot. Also, 99% of the number of corona deaths would be unvaccinated, according to the CDC.
