American continues to innovate in their sustainability field

American Airlines is launching a new website to showcase its efforts for a sustainable future in an innovative way. The company invests more and more in economical planes that run on low-carbon fuel and aims to reach zero greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) by 2050.

In 2020, American retired more than 150 old aircraft. Today more than half of the company’s fleet is less than 10 years old, with an average fleet age of 12 years. Last year, American received nine new Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners that are almost 20% more fuel efficient than the aircraft, and 24 new Airbus A321neos, designed to be 15% more fuel efficient than the previous generation.

In 2022, American Airlines used more than 2.5 million gallons of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), nearly double what it used last year. Additionally, with SAF agreements for current and future supplies of more than 620 million gallons, American targets to replace 10% of its jet fuel with SAF by 2030.

American’s ongoing fleet renewal efforts have helped the airline improve fuel efficiency by more than 10% since 2013, which is more than 22 million tons of carbon dioxide.

In light of these achievements, Air Transport World (ATW) magazine chose American Airlines as the ecological airline of the year for 2023.
