As studies have shown, taxes on sugar really can be an effective way to reduce the amount of refined sugar. And this, in turn, has a positive effect on public health because the increased intake of sugar from foods such as ice cream, soft drinks, fruit juices and candy, entails an increase in the probability of developing cancer, diabetes, vascular disease and many others.
American cardiologists have proposed to introduce new taxes on sugar. Thanks to computer models, the experts found that the most effective are tiered tax based on total sugar levels, as well as taxes on sugar based on the amount of sugar in a particular product.
”Our findings indicate that it would be best to use a tiered flat tax on the sugar content, reducing the consumption of the consumers as well as encouraging the reformulation of manufacturers to reduce sugar content in their products”– suggested cardiologists.
