American campaign to remove Iranian ministers from Twitter

Senator Ted Cruz, a member of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has sent a letter to Twitter CEO Jacques Dorsey, demanding that the company meet top Iranian government officials, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and Iranian Minister Foreigners should block the accounts of Javad Zarif. These two figures are included in the list of US sanctions against Iran. The Trump administration has also supported it, while Senators Tom Cotton, Marsha Blackburn and Marco Rubio have also come out in support of blocking the Twitter accounts of Iranian leaders.

In the letter, the senators wrote that the Obama administration had made an exception for programming services in Internet-based communications. This exemption includes instant messaging, chatting, e-mail and social networks. The Iranian government is allowed to spread its propaganda through American social media platforms such as Twitter. Ironically, this system is used by its own people. does not allow access to such platforms, but Iranian officials use these forums openly.

He said that America protects freedom of expression. Twitter should not censor Americans’ political discourse. As far as Iranian leader Ayatollah Khamenei is concerned, he represents the country that is supporting terrorism all over the world. Ayatollah Khamenei is directly responsible for the murder of hundreds of American citizens. If Khamenei is banned by the US government, every American company should also implement this ban.

The White House has been notified of the letter. A copy has also been sent to President Trump, Defense Secretary Steven Mnuchin and the Attorney General.
