Charles “Chuck” Feeney owned $ 8 billion, a fortune he acquired by selling the shares of his Duty Free Shoppers company, which has more than 400 offices worldwide.
Since 1982 he tried to get rid of that enormous fortune by donating it to all kinds of charities. He invested in anti-racism and poverty reduction, education, technology, political campaigns and human rights. His money was used, among other things, to modernize healthcare in Vietnam and to shape the peace process in Northern Ireland.
