New York on Sunday around 8 p.m. local time: The American model magazine “Swing” has placed an advertisement for its Billboard edition on one of the many large screens in Times Square. Pictures from the current cover story are presented. Artist Desislava Dimitrova appears on the cover and photographs that appear on the digital billboard in seconds. Many of the pictures were taken in her gallery “Asha” in Tirschenreuth.
“It’s awesome,” says Dimitrova, describing the feeling of seeing herself on the cover of a magazine and in Times Square. In an interview with Oberpfalz-Medien, the artist from Bulgaria reveals how this came about. Dimitrova’s shop in Tirschenreuth, a studio with a boutique, is repeatedly used as the backdrop for photo shoots. The 38-year-old, who is also a member of the Tirschenreuth Art Association, has been modeling for five years. To this end, she works with, among others, the amateur photographer Reinhard Frank from Wendern near Bärnau.
Attention via Instagram
“I was in Swing magazine three years ago,” says Dimitrova. The magazine became aware of her pictures via Reinhard Frank’s Instagram channel. He posted the pictures under his artist name Reiner Marlin and linked various magazines. He copied the trick from other photographers. “Nothing happened for a long time,” he remembers. Then new media kept contacting him, including the magazine “Swing”.
Instagram is a fast-moving tool. “Photos can be viewed there in a matter of seconds. If you don’t have good content in those three seconds, you’re gone,” says Dimitrova. Reinhard Frank has now published his photos in “Hazl Magazine” and “Praze Magazine”. “We haven’t gotten into ‘Vogue’ yet,” says Reinhard Frank. “But it has to go more towards fashion. We are more for the artistic,” explains the amateur photographer.
According to its website, “Swing” magazine promotes new talent worldwide and gives them a platform. In November last year, those responsible for the magazine wrote to Desislava Dimitrova again and asked if she would be interested in appearing on the cover of the January issue of Billboard with an interview and additional pictures. The 38-year-old immediately agreed. Among the pictures she sent in were seven that Reinhard Frank photographed. Below is the current “Swing” cover photo.
Black bowler hat and sunglasses
You can see Desislava Dimitrova with her head tilted back slightly. She wears a black bowler hat and sunglasses. The background is shrouded in shadows and blurry. The focus is on the model, her lips are colored dark red and slightly parted. In an elegant pose, she sits on an old restored chair, her legs crossed, her left hand bent under her chin. She wears a large ring on her middle finger and a rough wooden bracelet underneath on her wrist. Under a light blue dress she wears a transparent black long-sleeved shirt, where her tattoos on her arm show through. The foreground and background create a work of art.
Reinhard Frank’s passion for photography began eight years ago. At first he depicted landscapes or animals. “I then looked over other photographers’ shoulders.” Frank, who works full-time as a truck driver, wanted to try new ideas. At some point he switched to portrait photography. “There are worlds between landscapes and portraits,” says the 58-year-old, who took on the challenge.
He now regularly photographs women and men, sometimes against dark backdrops. “I work a lot with flash,” says Frank. Important elements in his pictures are light and shadow. “I just like it.” Desislava Dimitrova also contributes her ideas to the photo shoots. “We are a good team,” says Frank. While he chooses the backdrop, she decorates the setting, chooses suitable clothes and takes on the role of model.
Not a sex object
According to Dimitrova, the magazine “Swing” is also breaking new ground with photography as art. When looking at the magazine, you notice that it only depicts women, some of whom are shown in sexy and revealing poses. In addition to a fashion edition, there are also editions that present women in bikinis and underwear. It was important to Dimitrova that her images stood out. “If we do a photo shoot, it will be in my style,” says the artist. That’s why she only takes photos with photographers she trusts. This includes, among others, Achim Höfler from Nuremberg.
His pictures of Dimitrova were also featured in the cover story of Swing magazine. “Working with Achim is always an interesting experience – he takes modern, exciting photos with lots of light; I use colorful and bright clothing for the photo shoots. The photos reflect the other me,” says Dimitrova. She sees modeling as part of her art. That can be sexy at times, but it shouldn’t turn her into a sex object.
Dimitrova has been working as an artist for 20 years. In 2021 she opened her gallery “Asha” in Tirschenreuth. “When I’m here, we do events.” The mother of two’s shop is also a place for meetings, art exhibitions and concerts. Dimitrova also offers art workshops for children. She runs a second gallery in the Bulgarian capital Sofia.
The artist is currently working a lot as she is preparing two exhibitions in Bulgaria for May and June. Since Dimitrova travels a lot, her gallery in Tirschenreuth is only open when she is there. Approximately every two months for two appointments. She will next travel to Bulgaria in February. She uses her social media to provide information when she comes back to Germany and when new events are coming up.
