American Arms Exports Soared Over 50% Last Year, Russia Stance Affected

American arms exports grew by more than 50% last year.

Defense companies USA earned $81 billion from overseas military sales last year, up 56% from 2022. The conclusion of huge agreements was facilitated by Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The publication writes about this Politico.

U.S. arms sales abroad surged last year, reaching a record $238 billion. The U.S. government directly negotiated $81 billion in sales. The rest were direct sales of U.S. defense companies to foreign countries.

The largest arms buyers in Europe

The biggest agreements included nearly $30 billion in sales of attack and transport helicopters and long-range missiles to Poland and Germany as NATO rushes to stockpile cutting-edge weapons.

Thus, Poland, which is now trying to expand its army, made one of the largest purchases. Warsaw bought $12 billion worth of Apache helicopters, and also paid $10 billion for missile systems (HIMARS) and $3.75 billion for M1A1 Abrams tanks.

“The Russian defense industry continues to fail,” Mira Reznik, head of the State Department’s Office of Regional Security and Arms Transfer, told Politico.

She stressed that Russian arms manufacturers are “denied resources from exports,” such as cash.

Russia is losing its position as a key exporter

For decades, Russia was the second-largest arms exporter after the United States, with India, China and Egypt among its main clients. But its defense-industrial potential is being depleted due to the war in Ukraine, and the Russian Federation’s role as the world’s main arms supplier is under threat, according to a report by the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

“We see that because the Russian defense industry is deprived of resources coming from exports, it contributes to Russia’s strategic failure on the battlefield,” Reznik said.

Last year, the United States reached a landmark agreement with India – a $1.8 billion deal under which General Electric will make engines in India – as New Delhi tries to distance itself from its biggest arms supplier, Russia.

“We are seeing real tough decisions from partners in the Global South to reject Russian equipment. We would like to see more of India on this, and we continue to work and explore various trade opportunities with India,” Reznik added.

“The fiscal year 2023 arms sales total is the highest since 2020, when former President Donald Trump publicly played the role of top US military salesman,” Politico writes.

Washington also intends to push Argentina to buy used F-16 fighters instead of Chinese JF-17s.

Meanwhile, as the US works to support its allies in Taiwan against persistent threats from China, $19 billion of US weapons remain on the island.
