Flight Diverts after Passenger Attempts to Open Emergency Door
A passenger on American Airlines flight 1219, which was headed to Chicago International Airport, attempted to open the emergency door mid-flight, forcing the plane to return to Albuquerque International Sunport.
Disturbance on Board
The incident occurred approximately 30 minutes into the Boeing 737’s departure. The passenger, whose identity remains undisclosed, caused panic among passengers on the flight.
Passenger Account
The airline passenger identified as Don, who is known as the globetrotting host of Barstool Sports’ “Donnie Does,” shared his experience. He described the event as “very scary” but confirmed that the other passengers acted quickly to restrain the unruly individual.
Prompt Actions
Don reported that four or five passengers immediately responded to the situation. They apprehended the passenger and made efforts to prevent him from further accessing the emergency door. The group managed to subdue the individual by restraining his arms and legs.
Efficient Restraint
Don further explained that the airline flight attendant assisted in restraining the disruptive passenger. The flight attendant used duct tape to secure the unruly passenger’s legs and used flex cuffs to further restrain him. The disruptive passenger was then placed in a vacant row at the back of the plane.
Passenger’s Perspective
Don mentioned that the identified passenger displayed non-aggressive behavior after being removed from the emergency door. Following the incident, the plane diverted back to Albuquerque International Sunport, where local law enforcement promptly apprehended the unruly passenger.
Investigation Underway
The Albuquerque Division of the FBI confirmed that they are currently investigating the incident. The Albuquerque Police Department has been contacted for further information but has yet to respond.
