American Airlines told FOX Business on Monday that its service in Islip and Ithaca, New York, as well as Toledo, Ohio, will end as of September 7.as a result of the pilot shortage suffered by the industry in the United States.

“We are extremely appreciative of the care and service our team members have provided to our customers in Islip, Ithaca and Toledo, and we are working closely with them during this time,” American Airlines said.

The airline said it is working proactively and closely with customers scheduled to travel after September 7 to offer them alternative arrangements.

The decision to terminate the service at the aforementioned airports occurs when the US airlines face pilot shortage amid surging travel demand.

The aeronautical industry suffers from a lag of 12,000 pilots throughout the countrywhich has caused airlines to offer approximately 303 fewer flights.

According to the Regional Association of Airlines (RAA), there were 188 communities that lost at least 25% of their air serviceeither during the pandemic or during the first half of 2022 as the pilot shortage worsened.

The pilot shortage problem is not unique to American Airlines.Last month, Ben Minicucci, the CEO of Alaska Airlines, commented that the airline would have daily cancellations until June 1 for the same reason.

The airline had had operational problems since April due to the lack of pilots to fly on its spring schedule, and according to Minicucci, in its 1,200 daily flights, they have canceled about 50.

JetBlue has also explained that it has been forced to reduce flights during the summer due to personal problems.l, and in early 2022, United Airlines announced the start of its training program with which it projects to train around 5,000 new pilots by 2030, barely meeting half of its plan to recruit 10,000 new pilots to combat shortages by that date. Estimated.
