An American airline has put a six-year-old American boy who was flying alone to his grandmother in the state of Florida on the wrong flight. His grandmother had to drive more than 250 kilometers to pick him up.

The incident took place last week, but American media are only now reporting the news.

The boy had to fly from Philadelphia to the city of Fort Meyers, Florida. But Spirit Airlines accidentally put the boy on a flight to Orlando, which is more than 150 miles north.

It was the first time the boy had ever boarded a plane, he writes The Guardian. The boy’s luggage did arrive at the right place.

The grandmother told local media that the boy called her when he arrived. Before that, she had already checked with the flight attendants, who indicated that there were no children on board.

Spirit Airlines has offered to cover the grandmother’s travel expenses to Orlando. The airline is also launching an investigation into the incident.
