American actor Sean Penn presented one of his Oscar statuettes to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during his visit to Kiev in 2022, with the idea that the statuette would be “melted into bullets” and used to defend against a Russian invasion.
He explained that after the decision of the “American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences” not to allow Zelensky to speak at the Oscar ceremony in 2022, he decided to present Zelensky with an Oscar statuette.
“I thought what the hell… I’m going to give them to Ukraine. They can be melted down into bullets to shoot at the Russians,” he said in an interview with Variety magazine.
Penn has two Academy Awards in his career, both in the category of best actor – in 2003 for “Mystic River” and in 2008 for the film “Milk”.
Since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, Penn has already visited Kiev several times, where he presented Zelensky with an Oscar and promised to make a “documentary about Maidan and military operations.”
In a video posted by Zelensky on Instagram in November 2022, the two-time winner of the prestigious film award can be seen presenting the Oscar to the Ukrainian leader during their meeting in Kyiv.
Zelensky awarded the actor with the Order of Merit III degree for “sincere support and significant contribution to the promotion of Ukraine in the world.”
