American actor Jussie Smollett was sentenced to 150 days in prison and 30 months on probation for organizing a fake homophobic assault on himself, then lying to the police to make them believe it really happened. A Chicago court said Thursday, which in December had already decided to convict Smollett but had yet to communicate the sentence.
Smollett, who is gay and African American and is best known for starring in the TV series Empire, in 2019 he was accused of organizing the mock assault to gain visibility. He had reported being attacked by two white men outside a grocery store in Chicago. After a few days, however, several doubts arose about the attack and Smollett was arrested in Chicago on suspicion of telling the police false things.
The charges were dropped and the case closed, and then reopened. Of the six charges against him, the court he had confirmed fiveall related to the crime of disorderly conduct (similar to our “public nuisance”).
