(CNN)– The United States used its visa against a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, arguing that it does not sufficiently link the ceasefire to immediate release of enemies in the Struggle.
Deputy US Ambassador to the United Nations Robert Wood said: “We have made it clear throughout the negotiations that we cannot support an unconditional ceasefire that fails to release the enemies because, as this council previously requested, a permanent end to the war must “These two urgent goals are closely related.
Seven American citizens remain in custody in Gaza, of whom Wood said: “We will not forget them.”
Wood said the drafters of the resolution refused to consider language that could have led to it. He also said that the resolution “did not condemn Hamas for its terrorist attack on October 7.”
The resolution recalls “the primary responsibility of the Security Council to support international peace and security and calls for an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire respected by all parties; and also reiterates her demand for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages. ”
A senior American official said that this language in the cease-fire resolution in exchange for the release of the hostages is unnecessary, noting that the United States had submitted two proposals to ‘ language change.
He said Washington would have abstained from voting if the language was changed to match the consensus formula proposed by the United Kingdom.
This is the fourth resolution that the United States has canceled at the Security Council regarding a cease-fire in Gaza.
Before the vote, Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon said that adopting the resolution would be tantamount to “treason”.
The ten elected members of the Council declared (E10) who adopted the draft resolution expressed “deep disappointment” that the text was not adopted, according to Guyana’s Ambassador Caroline Alison Rodriguez Birkett, who represents one of the members of the G10.
Majed Bamieh, Deputy Ambassador of the Palestinian Mission to the United Nations, said: “There is no right to massacre an entire civilian population, there is no right to arrest them.
France, which voted in favor of the resolution, also expressed its disappointment, with the French representative to the United Nations, Nicolas de Rivière, saying: “It is clear that an immediate ceasefire is urgently needed and that conditions This is the only way to ensure the protection of all civilians and the delivery of emergency aid to a wide and unhindered area.
The United Kingdom also voted in favor of the resolution, which Ambassador Barbara Woodward described as “showing our determination to end this war, end the suffering in Gaza, and release the hostages in the immediately.”
