Sovereign throughout and energetic in the second stage, América had a gala night and secured a place in the round of 16 of the Copa do Brasil. The team thrashed Nova Iguaçu by 5-0, this Wednesday (26/4), at Independência, in a return game of the third phase. The goals were scored by Mikael, Everaldo, Aloísio (twice) and Felipe Azevedo.

The first leg ended with a score of 2 to 1 for Coelho, who needed only a draw to qualify. In an imposing performance, the team had a first half with many missed chances and calibrated their foot in the second half.

After Mikael opened the scoring, Coelho became more confident and practically did not let Nova Iguaçu touch the ball. In total, there were 13 correct shots, against two from the Fluminense team.

By qualifying for the round of 16, América secured an additional R$3.3 million in prize money, totaling R$8.5 million, considering the amounts pocketed in the first, second and third phases.

Coelho awaits the definition of the other clashes to know his next opponent. The draw of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) to define the duels will be next Tuesday (2/5).

Now, América turns its attention to the duel with Santos, on Saturday (4/29), at 6:30 pm, in Vila Belmiro, for the third round of the Brazilian Championship.

The game

América started dominant and the team’s posture was clear: press to open the scoring. Even without needing to win, the team did not let Nova Iguaçu create chances and kept possession of the ball in the attack. The team’s sovereignty was seen in the number of finals (15 to 1) and corner kicks (7) in the first half.

Everaldo was responsible for creating good plays on the left side. He was well activated, but was unable to consecrate the attacks. The chances missed by América showed that, as much as the team was focused, nervousness prevented the ball from going into the net. In total, there were nine submissions out.

America kept making Max work. Everaldo received a cross from Benítez and forced the goalkeeper to stretch to save the shot.

In a bid at 47 minutes, the referee signaled a penalty for América after Michel, from Nova Iguaçu, pulled Everaldo. However, after checking the VAR, the owner of the whistle canceled the appointment and withdrew the yellow card he had given to the player from the Fluminense team.

Second time

America came back from the break with the same will. Right at the beginning, Nicolas launched to Adyson, who received it on the left and, with a header, sent it to the small area. Juninho let it pass, but Mikael, well placed, hit it first: 1 to 0.

Nova Iguaçu, needing to score to at least take the decision to penalties, still looked shy. The best chance went to Matheus Alves, who headed in after a corner kick and forced Cavicchioli to work.

At 20 minutes, Everaldo missed an unbelievable chance. The striker received on the left, dribbled the opponent and passed the ball to get rid of the goalkeeper. However, the defender from Nova Iguaçu saved on top of the line.

After numerous attempts, Everaldo consecrated himself minutes before being substituted. With assistance from Felipe Azevedo, the striker received and pushed for the net: 2 to 0.

Excited and renewed with Mancini’s changes, América continued to go up. In the 30th minute, Aloísio won a one-on-one match and knocked low: 3-0.

To make up for the lost chances in the first half and stamp sovereignty once and for all, Coelho expanded with Felipe Azevedo, who received it in the small area and did not give Max a chance: 4 to 0.

At the end of the match, still without letting Nova Iguaçu breathe, Matheusinho received and, with tranquility, launched it at the head of Aloísio, who did not waste it and crowned the American performance: 5 to 0.
