NEWS ANALYSIS: It has built up throughout the summer: the chaotic march, the United States’ lack of consultation with its allies, the fall of Kabul and finally the terrorist attack that US intelligence knew about and warned about, but failed to avert.
And then the Americans finally say goodbye. Just before midnight, the last American soldier left Afghanistan.
But a meeting four days before the bombing in Kabul was the dramatic turning point.
Then the leaders of the world’s richest country, the so-called G7 group, met for an emergency meeting. One issue was on the agenda: a last desperate attempt by Europeans to persuade the United States to stay in Afghanistan for all to be evacuated was safe. If necessary, also beyond the deadline of 1 September.
