America Ferrera on Barbie’s Evolution and Representation in Film

Although today the euphoria to see Barbie is great, in the more than 60 years of history that the doll that is the protagonist of the film has established standards of beauty, femininity, and aspirations, with which not everyone has connected. One such person is actress America Ferrera.

“As a child I never played with Barbies,” she says in an interview.

However, now that she is part of the cast of the film starring Margot Robbie, she says that it was very exciting to learn what the doll is today.

In addition, he represents the Latino community in a way that is still difficult to see on screen.

“Barbie comes in all shapes, colors, genders, abilities, and it’s wonderful to be a part of such a massive change in narrative, which to me is the biggest and most important message about what the doll means today, is about being yourself and celebrate and express it.”

In the film, which hits theaters tomorrow, America plays Gloria, a real-world person Barbie arrives at after leaving Barbieland with Ken (Ryan Gosling).

“As a Latina, I’m not used to seeing characters written in movies of this size, about such pervasive cultural icons,” says the Ugly Betty actress.

“It could have been just as easy if there wasn’t a role for a Latina, but there is and that’s wonderful; what’s beautiful about that is that now there will be millions more people looking up and seeing themselves represented in this world,” she emphasizes.

America, of Honduran parents, thanks Greta Gerwig, the film’s director and co-writer, for including a character like hers.

“A stereotype that I loved that this movie was challenging, especially for Latinas, is that I felt that in a way we are used to seeing ourselves in our struggles, in our misery, obstacles, challenges, and this was a character for a Latina. that it was written in joy, fun, imagination”, he details.

“That feels like something we can’t do, see that often. Seeing ourselves being part of the joy, the celebration, of global iconic moments and not just the darker ones. It’s a great thing that we can see ourselves represented as Latinos in this brilliant and iconic global world.”
