América defeats Tijuana on penalties and advances to the league

The two-time champion América had to suffer in the penalty shootout to get a direct pass to the league by beating Tijuana 3-2 (on aggregate 5-4) in the play in. Thus, amid the controversy, the Águilas rescued for now one of the worst campaigns in recent tournaments and will face Toluca in the big party, while Xolos will have to fight on Sunday against Atlas for the last ticket to the quarterfinals of the Liga Mx.

After tying 2-2 in regular time, the Americans were barely saved on penalties because although Alejandro Zendejas and Álvaro Fidalgo failed in their shots, Tijuana had a worse performance from the eleven steps with the errors of Christian Rivera, Emmanuel Reynoso and Aarón Mejia.

Tijuana, led by Juan Carlos Osorio, took the lead at the Caliente stadium in the 15th minute when Unai Bilbao hit a header from the center of the area.

With the pressure on them, the Águilas balanced the score with a cross shot from Brian Rodríguez (51), but Xolos recovered the game just a minute later with a goal from José Zúñiga, who took advantage of a bad start by goalkeeper Luis Malagón.

However, Tijuana made a vital mistake when Nicolás Díaz was sent off (74) after kicking Álvaro Fidalgo in the face. It seemed that the border team would resist but in stoppage time Cristian Borja (90) appeared to get the tie and although Zendejas later reached the nets the goal was disallowed due to a handball, which sent the duel to penalties.

The play in format indicates that the seventh and eighth places in the general table, Tijuana and América, had to face each other for a direct pass to the league. The loser of that series must look for the last ticket against the winner of the duel between ninth and tenth place, Chivas and Atlas.
