In France, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was released on May 4, 2022 at the cinema. In this feature film, we could see America Chavez taking her first steps in the MCU. This heroine who appeared for the first time in the comic book Vengeance #1 in September 2011 is embodied by the young Xochitl Gomez. The latter notably played in the Netflix series The Baby-Sitters Club.
America Chavez is a character who comes from another universe called Utopian Parallel. Her uniqueness is that she has the ability to travel through dimensional portals. On the other hand, America Chavez stands out for being the first Latin American MCU heroine to be a member of the LGBTQ+ community.
Unfortunately, this has earned him the target of homophobic comments on the web.
From phase 4 of the MCU, Marvel wanted to be more inclusive. In the Eternals, we saw the first homosexual superhero in the person of Phastos (Brian Tyree Henry). Doctor Strange 2 continues on the same path by introducing America Chavez.
However, this choice is not unanimous. And for the past few weeks, America Chavez has been the subject of numerous homophobic comments on the web. Some of them are even addressed to Xochitl Gomez who, let us remember, is only 16 years old.
Recently, Benedict Wong, who plays Wong, spoke with Asia One. He took advantage of this interview to defend Xochitl Gomez. The actor made it clear that he condemned the harassment of the young actress.
” It’s not correct. We all have to understand that she auditioned at 13 and joined us at 14. She is one of the youngest actresses to join the MCU in a film of such magnitude. You know, she’s just a young actress trying to play her role and it’s admirable. »
The actor called those attacking Xochitl Gomez a « trolls » and of “cowards. » And for him, the haters of the young actress should feel ashamed of what they do.
