Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness director Sam Raimi reveals more details about Xochitl Gomez’s America Chavez. Raimi is best known for his work on horror films, including The Evil Dead, the army of darknessand, of course, at the head of Sony Spider Man trilogy with Tobey Maguire. Following strange doctor (2016) director Scott Derrickson’s exit from the project, Marvel Studios Foliage multiverse sees Raimi making a comeback in the comic book genre.
Described as the first horror film to be set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the strange doctor the sequel will follow its titular wizard as he ventures across the multiverse. Following WandaVision, Loki, Et si…?and Spider-Man: No Coming Home, Foliage multiverse is about to fully embrace the multiverse concept of Phase Four as its heroes encounter alternate and variant versions of themselves and other well-known characters. The film stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Rachel McAdams, Benedict Wong, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Elizabeth Olsen, all reprising their MCU roles. Alongside them, Gomez makes her MCU debut as America Chavez, who was originally set to appear in Spider-Man: No Coming Home.
With only a month to go Foliage multiverse theatrical releases, the promotion is ramping up, and the creators behind it are doling out teases about the film. In a recent interview with fandango, Raimi was asked to portray the relationship between America Chavez and Doctor Strange in the film. Specifically, Raimi talked about what Chavez adds to the story. Read his full response below:
“Well, she adds an exciting youthful spirit. She is a newcomer to her powers and to our world. She actually comes from another universe. I think it brings a feeling of lightness and youth. Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange can be a very selfish, stuffy, know-it-all character. She just flies in the face of it. She doesn’t really have any respect for him originally. She sees through the facades he erects. She’s much more down to earth and one of us, and she doesn’t take her attitude. I don’t think he likes it at first. So she creates a contrast.
Chavez will create more than a contrast in Foliage multiverse. In the comics, the character hails from a pocket dimension known as the Utopian Parallel and has the ability to open portals to other universes. It seems likely that Chavez will be forced to flee her reality and team up with Strange and Wong to fight off some sort of multiversal threat. Chavez’s star portals can be seen briefly in the film’s trailer, which also teases an evil Strange/Strange Supreme, Defender Strange, one or more variants of Wanda, and Patrick Stewart’s Professor Charles Xavier, who appears to be a member of the Illuminati.
Suffice it to say Strange’s universe jumps in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will be facilitated by Chavez. That said, the pair could encounter everything from zombies, mutants, and Spider-Men to Superior Iron Man. Beyond Foliage multiverse, Marvel Studios has yet to reveal Chavez’s sequel. Given the character’s ties to the multiverse and the MCU’s multiverse narrative, there’s a good chance she’ll appear in more projects after the sequel.
