AMD’s Radeon RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT: Interview with Scott Herkelman, Head of Radeon Division

AMD recently introduced graphics cards Radeon RX 7800 XT a RX 7700 XTwhich definitively closed the RDNA chapter 3. In response to their introduction, the portal Club386 invited to an interview Scott as Herkelman, head of the Radeon division, who presents new GPU solutions at conferences. They were answered questions about ray-tracing, energy efficiency or reference designs.

As is known, the fight for the maximum efficiency of new generation graphics cards was clearly won by Nvidia, even before the release of the RTX 4090 model it seemed that it had no chance. Speculations at the time about the alleged 600W consumption did not let some sleep. However, after the release of the individual cards, it became clear that the pieces from Nvidia are designed with a lower TDP and at the same time consume less during gaming and idle time.

Herkelman said the company strives to achieve the best possible performance per watt. He added that this matters a lot for laptops, and also stated that it plays a key role for desktops as well. However, in their case, according to Herkelman, it doesn’t matter so much to the users themselves.

“Power is definitely a major initiative. You will see that we will continue to improve it over time. We have to catch up. There are still bugs that we need to fix. Idle consumption is one of them. We believe there is a driver fix for it.” he declared.

There is also a power related issue using the controversial 12VHPWR adapter, which was adapted by the new-generation models from Nvidia, but AMD has not yet decided to deploy it. Herkelman said that it was originally planned to use this solution for the new pair of Radeons, but it was later abandoned.

“You shouldn’t blame the end users for the problems you have. You should catch problems and be held accountable for them, as we did with the steam chamber.” he added on that account, presumably alluding to rival Nvidia’s stance. The one on the situation with the melting 12VHPWR cables she responded by saying that consumers themselves are to blame for the problems, with poor wiring.

At the same time, Nvidia still leads in terms of ray-tracing performance. AMD is no doubt aware of this, and Herkelman stated during the interview that the company must improve the shortcomings in the next generation.

“We just need to improve in future generations and make sure we have the right architecture for effective ray tracing. Furthermore, we must continue to cooperate with ISV partners [ISV = nezávislý prodejce softwaru, pozn. red.]so that players have the best possible experience,” stated

Many of you also probably didn’t miss that AMD only released the Radeon RX 7800 XT in the Made by AMD reference, not the cheaper 7700 XT. Herkelman revealed that the main focus was on the more expensive card. In addition, the red team is said to be trying to give as much space as possible to its production partners.

“The Radeon RX 7700 XT is a more price-sensitive GPU. We decided to lead with the RX 7800 XT, which is why it has the MBA option. If there was demand for an RX 7700 XT MBA, we would consider it; as far as we know, it’s not enough,” he added.
