AMD’s new VGM technology allows up to 75% of the memory to be allocated to video memory

AMD has announced Variable Graphics Memory (VGM) technology, which allows notebook users to reallocate memory to improve graphics performance.

How does it work?

The technology is currently only available for laptops with AMD AI 300 Strix Point chips. Owners of such laptops can now use the AMD Adrenalin application to allocate up to 75% of the system memory as video memory. For example, a laptop with 32 GB of RAM and 512 MB of video memory can turn into a device with 24 GB of RAM and 8 GB of video memory.

This feature is especially useful for games that require large amounts of video memory, such as Alan Wake II. In tests on an Asus Zenbook S 16 laptop with variable graphics memory enabled, performance in the game Control increased from 54 to 65 frames per second. However, not all games showed a significant improvement.

AMD has also introduced Fluid Motion Frames 2 technology, which increases the frame rate and creates new images with lower latency. Combined with variable graphics memory and FSR technology, laptops can achieve significant performance gains. For example, the frame rate of the game Horizon Zero Dawn can be increased from 39 to 66 frames per second.
