AMD’s Decision to Stick with Classic Connectors for Radeon Series: Power Supply Concerns and Potential Solutions

Herkelman, who is senior vice president in charge of the graphics division, explained that the Radeon RX 7900 (Navi 31) a RX 7600 (Navi 33) from the beginning counted on classic connectors, so the power supply is as it should have been according to the original plan. The first products with the new solution were supposed to be the Radeon RX 7800 / RX 7700 (Navi 32), but due to the problems brought by the 16-pin power supply, the decision was made to modify the design and stay with the classics.

Recall that after last year’s release of the GeForce RTX 4090, complaints began to appear about burnt and melted connectors, which users usually registered when the card stopped working. Later, users who checked their cards as a result of the media coverage of the case also reported being overwhelmed. At first, the problem was attributed to low-quality reductions, later to a kink in the power cable, then to an improperly tightened connector. However, there were users who, according to their own statements, were not affected by even one potential reason, despite this, the meltdown occurred.

Scott Herkelman (AMD)

Herkelman stated that AMD is not opposed to the transition to 16-pin power supply in principle, but will not proceed until it is convinced that the problems are solved.

Club386: Still no 12VHPWR on any Radeon [=16pin]. Do you see this as a pressing issue?

Scott Herkleman: Specifically for the 7900 series, and not even for the 7600, we didn’t count on a new power cable, but we did count on it for the 7800 and 7700. We intentionally removed it. You shouldn’t blame end users for your own problems. You should catch and acknowledge all the problems, just like we did with the vapor chamber problem [parní komorou]. I took it up on all social media because I was convinced it was AMD’s problem and therefore mine.

Once the power issue is resolved and we’re confident enough that it’s working properly for end users, you’ll see that [16pin konektor] we will include in our plans. To consider it an end-user error is a bit of an odd approach for AMD, and especially for me.

So far there have been several suggestions to address the situation, such as Intel coming up with improvements to the connector to ensure better contact and Nvidia adjusting the length of the communication pins so that the communication pins are not plugged in without the power pins being pushed in enough.
