AMDA regrets 2-year extension to regularize used imported cars

The Mexican Association of Automotive Distributors (AMDA) regretted that the Ministry of Finance issued an extension to regularize the importation of used vehicles for two more years, since I consider that this measure goes against the objectives of the elected president Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo .

The decree issued in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF) on Wednesday afternoon indicates that since the first measure published in January 2022, 2 million 559 thousand 256 vehicles have been regularized.

The AMDA commented that given resident Sheinbaum’s “technical knowledge, professional career and commitment to the environment,” it was expected that this policy would be reversed.

He pointed out that the specifications to regularize the so-called chocolate cars have not been met, since they do not meet the characteristics or technical aspects for their circulation in the country, they do not comply, even vehicles involved in crimes have been introduced into the national territory.

“During the validity of the (first) decree, the flow of automotive smuggling has continued, when a requirement is that the vehicles had to be in Mexico by October 19, 2021,” he said.

“Another point that has also been confirmed is the participation of organized crime gangs in the entire process of smuggling and illegal sale of vehicles,” said the AMDA.

He pointed out that this measure has impacted the sale of new light cars, as is the case of Chihuahua, where in August sales fell 5.6 percent at an annual rate. He added that a similar situation is observed in other border states.
