What AMD is up to after Zen 3 and Zen 4 will seem very brutal. For the number of cores, but also for consumption.
Information was now alternating that Nvidia’s computing GPU was they will have a TDP over 1000 W or freshly that Alder Lake processors despite leaving an inefficient 14nm process also does not rank reverse in calorific value. Eventually it reached AMD. In future generations of computing hardware, its consumption will also rise. Zen 5 processors could consume up to 2x more power in servers than today. Even on cores, however, they will be monsters.
Yesterday, a leaker with the nickname ExecutableFix called again, who has already cleared the parameters this week computing GPU AMD Instinct MI250X with Aldebaran chip (s) (otherwise he has to eat 500 W). He has now released information on Twitter that future AMD Epyc processors codenamed “Turin” (AMD uses the names of the Italian cities where the race circuit is located) will have a cTDP of 600 W.
Now the official TDP of the Epics 7002 and 7003 is “only” 280 W, so 600 W would be an increase of more than 100% (more precisely 114%). Only one model, Epyc 7763, has this consumption, most others have a TDP “only” 225 W or less.
What will this Turin be? Because it is “Epyc”, it must be a server processor, but it is probably not the nearest, fourth generation Epyc 7004 with Zen 4 architecture (supposedly up to 96 cores) and a 5nm process. These processors are said to be codenamed Genoa. Turin could therefore be the fifth generation, which could already be 3nm and contain straight Zen 5 cores. When it comes out, it is not clear. It could not be a matter until 2024.

It should be added that cTDP is not the same as TDP. Basic TDP is the default power setting for a processor or GPU or other chip, while cTDP means configurable TDP, a value to which the processor can be set optionally. Really, therefore, Turin will probably have a lower TDP and 600W consumption would then be the value to which the TDP can be increased, for example in water-cooled servers in order to increase performance (although, in theory, it could still be a reduced cTDP from an even higher TDP, it there is also…).
In any case, it seems that the trend of thickening performance and, in the face of increased consumption, will continue not only with Intel or GPUs, but also with AMD server CPUs.
However, this densification should also provide a concentration of performance, so that criticism of these high consumptions can be countered by the fact that such a GPU or CPU becomes the equivalent of several earlier smaller processors and is therefore normal and acceptable to have much higher power consumption.
Zen 5: 192 to 256 years?
After ExecutableFix, another in both last active leaker appeared with the information that “Epyc with Zen 5 cores” will have two variants – the weaker one should have 192 cores and 384 threads (so notice that we are still with SMT2, no SMT4) . And next to it, there will be an even more powerful variant with up to 256 cores and 512 threads. From both variants there should probably be all sorts of cheaper derivatives with smaller numbers of cores, of course. However, the maximum configuration would have up to 4x more cores than today’s most powerful server CPU Epyc 7763.

Greymon55 does not mention the name Turin, but reacted with this statement to a previous escape, so it could be concluded that Turin is Epyc with Zen 5 architecture. Such high numbers of cores probably mean that if a similar chip structure as today is still used, there should be many more nuclei in eight pieces of silicon. Because 256 cores would need 32 eight-core chipsets or 16 chipsets with 16 cores, which seems inefficient and difficult to interconnect (unless the MCM architecture and encapsulation technology make much progress).
But maybe we can look forward to Zen 5 bringing significantly higher numbers of cores, which could happen not only in the servers, but also in the AM5 desktop platform. The Zen 5 architecture would allegedly (at least says AMD’s chief CPU roadmap chief Mike Clark) should be an architecture that could be very strong. It will be a new core again, while Zen 4 should still be an evolutionary development of the Zen 3 architecture. AMD seems to be working on a two-stage development now, with odd architectures brand new and even ones improving them, so that the next odd Zen starts a new one. However, it’s probably still far enough, so it’s too early for performance estimates.
