AMD was selling cards to fans by invitation, and the rest were not enough

We do not know who is to blame for this situation – coronavirus, limited stocks, speculators or careless statements by AMD’s chief game architect Frank Azor – however, the reference versions of Radeon RX 6800 XT and RX 6800 video cards launched yesterday were instantly sold out. Moreover, the novelties never made it to many stores. Including to Russian ones.

On the Web, many complain that they did not have time to place a purchase, since all the available offers ended in a matter of minutes, so their order was canceled. Others complain that the graphics cards haven’t even made it to their local stores. Many people remember the words of Frank Azor about “Paperless startup”, the rest – with tears in their eyes, watch how the sold-out video cards began to appear on the eBay site at absurdly inflated prices.

Recall that in Russia, video cards in the reference version from AMD itself will not be sold, various partners of the company will be engaged in the implementation of new products. Western users, in turn, have the opportunity to purchase AMD products directly through its official website. However, most ordinary buyers were deprived of this opportunity, as AMD decided to play unfairly this time.

Screenshots of letters that the company sent to its most loyal users, who are part of the so-called Team Red Plus team, appeared on the Web. Its participants got an exclusive opportunity to purchase Radeon RX 6800 XT and RX 6800 video cards before the rest. In particular, in a letter, AMD indicated that the offer is limited and asked not to share the link to purchase a video card with “other” consumers.

Against the background of such news, the words of Frank Azora look especially cynical, who said via Twitter that he himself was able to purchase a Radeon RX 6800 video card through the AMD website, without using a corporate account, but only having updated the product page several times for this.

As for the Russian market, the Radeon RX 6800 XT and RX 6800 video cards are not sold anywhere else as a separate product. New items can only be found in ready-made gaming computers. For example, such:

AMD’s Russian office thinks otherwise. Her press release states the following:

“The Radeon RX 6800 and RX 6800 XT are available today in retail stores and on AMD.com for a suggested retail price of RUB 53,590 and RUB 59,990, respectively.”.

Unfortunately, in fact the situation turned out to be the opposite. For example, according to comment on the DNS Club website, which, apparently, was left by a representative of the DNS retail network, on November 18, the start of sales of new products from the Russian seller did not take place. The message also indicates that the delivery of graphics accelerators is delayed, and there will be few copies at the start. There is no certainty about the start date of sales yet. They may start on November 19, or they may not. Nevertheless, the company will try to notify potential buyers in a timely manner before the launch. The Russian retailer uses a similar approach to sales in relation to NVIDIA graphics cards GeForce RTX 30 series.
