AMD vs Nvidia: The Winner at the $13,000 Price Level – Radeon RX 7700 XT vs GeForce RTX 4060 Ti

At the price level of around thirteen thousand, the competition between AMD and Nvidia has a clear winner.

The new Radeon RX 7700 XT is fitted with a stripped-down Navi 32 chip from the RX 7800 XT. This weaker variant has only 54 of 60 CUs, 3,456 of 3,840 stream processors, and 216 of 240 texturing units active. 96 rasterization units were preserved. The RX 7700 XT suffered a significant reduction in memory, it has only three MCDs active, so the bus width dropped from 256 to 192 b, and it also got slower memory with 18 Gb/s instead of 19.5 Gb/s. The total throughput thus dropped by almost a third from up to 624 GB/s to up to 432 GB/s. This is only slightly compensated by the higher clocks, the indicated game clock rose from 2,124 MHz to 2,171 MHz and the boost clock from up to 2,430 MHz to up to 2,544 MHz. Unfortunately, the indicated power consumption has dropped less than the power, from 263 to only 245 W.

The competing GeForce RTX 4060 Ti brought only a small increase in performance against the older RTX 3060 Ti, while it is one to two thousand more expensive. The capacity of the video memory, which remained at 8 GB, was also disappointing. It looks even worse next to the weaker RTX 3060, which came to the market two years ago with 12 GB GDDR6.

A few months before the launch of the 8GB RTX 4060 Ti in May, there were several games that had problems at maximum settings even at lower resolutions on 8GB cards due to lack of memory. They were manifested by stuttering of the image, drops in frame rates or random display of textures with a very low resolution. In response to this, a number of tests appeared that pointed out that 8 GB of memory on some modern cards is no longer enough even for Full HD.

Most of the problems mentioned were due to poor conversion optimization of console games. In the meantime, the developers have worked on the fix and there are only a few problematic titles where it is necessary to reduce the details due to lack of memory. Still, today buying cards with 8 GB of memory for ten thousand is not attractive, seeing that this situation can be repeated with any new game. And even if the reaction to the problems in games like Resident Evil 4, Hogwarts Legacy or The Last of Us Part 1 was a bit exaggerated in terms of subsequent fixes, in the future memory-intensive games will appear more often as the share of cards among people increases with higher memory capacity.

Because of this, players and reviewers are making it quite loud that they don’t like the 8 GB of memory on the not-so-cheap RTX 4060 Ti. AMD has long offered cards with 12 or 16 GB of memory in a similar price category. This is probably also why Nvidia decided to silence all critics with the second, better equipped 16GB version of the RTX 4060 Ti. The 8 GB of good memory, however, added more to the price of the cards than it deserved. Among other things, also because manufacturers offer 16GB versions only in more expensive and better equipped models. For the cheapest ones and in terms of the price/performance ratio, they only have 8GB variants in their range.
