Getting a strong foothold and what can be considered good products for desktops can be considered much easier than in laptops. This is something AMD is experiencing with its Ryzen processors, which on the desktop side in a couple of years managed to snap Intel on the nose, while the parties in laptops can be considered to strike even blows with clear advantages and disadvantages between the alternatives.
Laptops in particular are also an area on the rise, not least gamingmodels, which is why AMD is also investing heavily here. During CES 2022, the company launches a new generation of processors in the Ryzen 6000 series, where AMD promises improvements on all sides – performance, energy efficiency, battery life and features.

The new Ryzen 6000 series goes by the code name “Rembrandt” and in the center is the architecture Zen 3+, which, however, has no architectural improvements in terms of instructions per clock cycle (IPC). The improvements are exclusively about more and better power saving functions, something that in addition to longer battery life still leads to performance improvements as the processors are able to maintain higher clock frequencies over time.
By far the biggest news is the integrated graphics part, which eventually takes the step away from the aging architecture Vega over to RDNA 2. The number of computing units simultaneously increases from 8 to 12 for a total of 768 stream processors, and at the same time AMD gives the maximum clock frequency a 20- percent lift from 2.0 to 2.4 GHz.
When AMD talks about performance improvements, it is with large numbers, but in the small print there is a firecracker. When the top model for ultra-thin computers Ryzen 7 6800U is compared to its predecessor Ryzen 7 5800U, the new one has a TDP value set to 28 W, while the older one has to cope with a much lower 15 W. With this in mind, AMD talks about 30 percent better multi-wire CPU performance and up to 100 percent better graphics performance.
The new power saving functions are in many ways about being able to switch off different features faster and more fine-grained. AMD does not make any comparisons about what improvements are to be expected in terms of battery life, but only mentions that video playback of up to 24 hours is possible. A second part that contributes to increased energy efficiency is the transition to TSMC’s manufacturing technology 6 nanometers.

Furthermore, the Ryzen 6000 “Rembrandt” adds DDR4 memory support to the documents and supports exclusively the latest DDR5 with an effective clock frequency of 5,200 MHz and LPDDR5 at 6,400 MHz. In terms of other connections, this is flanked by support for USB 4, PCI Express takes the step from version 3.0 to 4.0 and the platform receives official support for wireless network Wifi 6E and Bluetooth LE 5.2. It’s all rounded off by a broad support video and screen oriented features, such as AV1, HDMI 2.1 and Displayport 2.0.
The first laptops with Ryzen 6000 series processors will be launched in February 2022.
