AMD Ryzen 9 9950X follows the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X model, a monster that has 16 physical cores and supports 32 threads at the same time, just like its predecessor that was released from the 3000 series. the most powerful processor in the AMD Ryzen 9000 family does not change anything in terms of configuration, since the manufacturer’s offer also includes AMD Ryzen Threadripper models, and Intel Core i9-14900K or Core i9- 13900K Performance and Efficiency cores combined to achieve similar multi-threaded performance. With the promised microarchitectural advances, AMD Ryzen 9 9950X has every expectation of taking first place in program-oriented performance tests.

AMD Zen 5 power architecture processors AMD Ryzen 9000 (Granite Ridge), a natural evolution of AMD Ryzen 7000 (Raphael), opens the second chapter on the AM5 platform. AMD Ryzen 9000 units use CCD blocks (Eldora) made in TSMC N4X lithography, holding more than 8 billion transistors on an area of 70.6 mm². Therefore, the density was increased compared to the old Durango CCDs (71 mm² / 6.5 billion transistors). Architecture Zen 5 it also increases front-end throughput, extends compute pipelines and vectors, improves data transfers between caches, and reduces internal latencies. The L1-D Cache subsystem was further expanded (32 KB 8-Way → 48 KB 12-Way), the number of arithmetic and logical units was increased (4 → 6), there are four units for working memory addresses out (AGU). added and improved FMUL instruction handling, FADD, FMA and AVX-512. All this means that the confirmed IPC increase is 16% compared to Zen 4, but the manufacturer also took care to improve energy efficiency by implementing lower lithography in the case of cores. We wrote more about the architecture in materials prepared according to the information received during the AMD Tech Day (CHILDREN i CHILDREN).

AMD Ryzen 9 9950X is the main representative of the new family, intended more for professional use than for computer games. Its competitor will be Intel Core i9-14900K.

AMD Ryzen 9 9950X is the main representative of the Granite Ridge family, based on two full CCD modules with eight physical computing units each. In total, the processor has sixteen cores and supports twice as many threads thanks to SMT technology. Proven before AMD Ryzen 7 9700X this is the exact half of the flagship that is the subject of this review. A positive effect of CCD duplication is the presence of 64 MB of Cache L3 memory, which should at least partially eliminate the biggest drawback of compilers – internal delay. It should be remembered that some computer games, including: Dying Light 2, Starfield and Total War: Warhammer III run more efficiently on monolithic models. The main competitor of the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X is, of course, the Intel Core i9-14900K, which also performs the same number of threads, although the design of the unit is completely different (a combination of P and E cores). However, the TDP has not been reduced compared to the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X, and the remaining models in the Ryzen 9000 family are characterized by a lower TDP than their predecessors.

Which processor will benefit more from fast DDR5 RAM? Intel Core i5-14600K vs AMD Ryzen 7 7700X processor test

AMD Ryzen 9 9950X received a dual-channel DDR5 RAM controller, officially supporting 5600 MHz models (2x 1R / 2x 2R), while the manufacturer believes that sets locked at 6000 MHz are optimal. It is worth noting, however, that the 6000 MHz CL30 1:1 options offer performance at the level of 7000 MHz CL32 1:2. You can find detailed tests, for example HERE. The block containing the controllers has remained unchanged compared to its predecessors, as well as the integrated graphics system based on the RDNA 2.0 architecture. The base clock speed of the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X (4300-5700 MHz) is slightly reduced compared to the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X (4500-5700 MHz), although only tests can confirm the actual clocks. Important information here – AMD suggested using a main parking driver in the Ryzne 9 9950X model, as in the dual-module X3D, which should theoretically bring benefits in slightly higher clock speeds. In the end, however, it turns out that it does more harm than good, so I gave up this solution, because 7 out of 10 had better results games without parking.

ATTENTION: On a separate subpage, I put performance tests with memory DDR5 G.Skill Trident Z5 Royla 6400 MHz CL32 1:1as a reference to the standard 7000 MHz CL32 1:2 modules. The stability limit of the synchronous mode is still 6400 MHz, while 6600 MHz was already full of BSODs, so there are no significant improvements compared to the AMD Ryzen 7000 series. The models used are a set of 2x 32 GB Dual Rank.
