AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D received 3D V-Cache memory on only one chiplet

This is a trade-off in terms of overclocking and gaming performance.

Resource PC World continue to fly the banner of industry journalism. Representatives of the publication at CES 2023 managed to chat with AMD director of product management Scott Stankard (Scott Stankard) and demonstrate the recently introduced Ryzen 9 7950X3D processor without coverage. Even the photo itself revealed visual differences in the chiplets with processing cores, and comments from an AMD representative confirmed that there is a significant difference between them.

In the older processor of the line, 3D V-Cache memory is found only on one of the chiplets with processing cores. On the one hand, this has allowed the company to provide adequate frequency potential for the second chiplet’s cores, and are able to automatically overclock to 5.7GHz when appropriate. At the same time, in games, 3D V-Cache memory on the adjacent chiplet allows for increased performance. If it were on both chipsets, it wouldn’t provide a proportional increase in performance, but it would increase cost, so the Ryzen 9 5950X3D processor turned out to be “asymmetric” in terms of memory layout, as Scott explained.

At the same time, he added that the Ryzen 9 7950X3D processor has expanded overclocking capabilities over its predecessor, although processors with 3D V-Cache memory still shouldn’t overclock the same results as models without additional memory.
