Jakarta –
AMD released a new line of Threadripper processors from the Ryzen 7000 series, including Threadripper Pro which is designed for high-end workstations.
Apart from the Pro variant, there is also a HEDT variant aimed at high end desktop PCs and also ‘prosumers’ who do not need the features of eight-channel RAM or PCIe Gen 5.
Both the Pro and HEDT versions are made using Zen 4 architecture which can use PCIe Gen 5 for super fast storage. The fastest variant is the Threadripper Pro 7995WX which has 96 cores and 192 threads, with a max boost of 5.3GHz, 384MB L3 cache, and 128 PCIe Gen 5 lanes.
However, there is also an entry level version of Threadripper Pro with the 7945WX series which only has 12 cores and 24 threads, as quoted by detikINET from The Verge, Monday (23/10/2023).
But for the “average” user, the Threadripper HEDT may be a more realistic choice. For example, for users in the design, manufacturing, architecture and similar sectors. There are three Threadripper variants, with the most expensive variant being the 7980X which has 64 cores and 128 threads, 5.1 GHz boost and a total cache of 320MB. Price? USD 4,999.
Users who want to build a workstation with Threadripper also need to think about the RAM and motherboard to pair with this monster processor. The reason is that this latest Threadripper only supports registered memory, so unbuffered dual in-line memory modules are not supported with this processor.
Meanwhile, for motherboards, AMD also introduced the TRX50 series motherboards for HEDT CPUs and the WRX90 for the Pro platform. Although technically, the TRX50 also supports the use of the Pro version of the CPU. However, users cannot get eight-channel memory support or PCIe Gen 5 128 lanes with TRX 50.
The AMD Ryzen 7000 Threadripper will be available starting November 21 2023, and will immediately become a rival to the Intel Xeon, Core, and even the regular Ryzen 7000.
