AMD Releases New Desktop APUs (Socket AM5): Prices, Release Date, and Surprise Ryzen AI Support!

We’ve been covering the new desktop APUs (socket AM5) for the past few weeks, so most of what AMD has released won’t surprise you. But three new pieces of information were said:

1. prices

The official recommended price of the eight-core Ryzen 7 8700G will be $329, the official price of the six-core Ryzen 5 8600G will be $229, for the lower six-core Ryzen 5 8500G $179, only for the Ryzen 3 8300G no specific amount has been set yet and we will probably find out the price upon release.

2. release date

The availability date for retail markets (box processors) is set for January 31st. So there are three weeks left. The OEM segment, the manufacturers of assemblies in which these processors will appear only in the spring, will have to wait significantly longer, as AMD will not start deliveries until the second quarter. For this type of product, this is a relatively unusual situation where retail was given priority.

3. Ryzen AI

Perhaps the biggest surprise is that AMD has retained support for Ryzen AI, i.e. the NPU unit, the XDNA AI accelerator for both of the more powerful models (Ryzen 7 8700G and Ryzen 5 8600G). It was assumed that AMD would use pieces of chips for the desktop that have this circuit damaged at the factory and therefore cannot be used in notebooks, but in the end the situation is different. However, it must be added that the effects of the NPU in the desktop will not be great, as its goal is primarily to perform AI operations with minimal consumption, which has an impact mainly in notebooks, where the acceleration of these demanding tasks via the GPU or CPU would quickly “eat” the battery. Desktop doesn’t have this problem, so this feature is more of a nice bonus than a major feature.

All models also support a reduced TDP configuration to 45 watts. Ryzen 7 has a GPU clocked at 2900 MHz, both Ryzen 5 models at 2800 MHz and Ryzen 3 at 2600 MHz. AMD says in the specs on the website that the Ryzen 3 8300G has 8 CUs, which is most likely a typo; considering the anticipated use of a smaller version of the APU is almost certainly 4 CU. It is not yet specified whether coolers will be included with the processors.
