AMD RDNA 5 Architecture Rumors: What to Expect in the Next Generation GPUs

There’s a new rumor from Chiphell forum member wjm47196, who is known for his cryptic posts on the site, but was accurate when it came to some of his previous leaks, such as Radeon RX 6000 series graphics cards and NVIDIA RTX 30 It has been a while since this series launched GPUs, so the forum member returned to post about the next generation of series from AMD.

A leak claims that AMD’s plans for its RDNA 3 line of GPUs have not gone as planned. Problems with RDNA 3 were caused by the resulting silicon not meeting internal performance predictions, and it was evident that the necessary efficiency improvements were not as significant as expected. On the other hand, NVIDIA’s “Ada” GPUs outperformed AMD’s RDNA 3 chips in performance across all categories. Additionally, AMD had to reduce their original designs, which were going to include up to 192MB of Infinity Cache, to just 96MB due to cost and power constraints.

AMD’s RDNA 4 will largely be an architectural overhaul of the RDNA 3. The lineup is said to be similar to the Radeon RX 7900 XT GPUs, and we know there will be two SKUs, Navi 48 and Navi 44 , and both focus. at the mainstream and entry level consumer level, like the first generation RDNA GPUs (Radeon RX 5000 series). One area where there will be significant improvements is in ray tracing performance, which is in line with previous rumors, especially since a similar IP block will be used for Sony’s upcoming PS5 Pro console.

AMD also has RDNA 3+ in development, which will primarily power the iGPU in the next generation of Ryzen APUs such as the Strix Point and Strix Halo. In addition, it is not clear whether RDNA 3+ will be limited to iGPUs or whether there will be a separate display based on the architecture. Recent rumors have also said that AMD does not plan to introduce new Radeon RX 8000 GPUs this year, but NVIDIA is expected to release its flagship Blackwell RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 GPUs later forward this year.

AMD RDNA 5 is expected to be built on a completely new architecture designed from the ground up, and it is not even known if AMD will keep the RDNA 5 branding for it or turn it into something completely new. The Radeon family has been waiting for the promised “Zen” moment for a long time, and RDNA 5 is expected to be just that.

AMD will do a full case study when developing the next generation architecture. RDNA 5 is also said to be the main reason why RDNA 4 has been canceled so often so that more time can be spent developing the next generation while still offering a mainstream series that is not needed on a lot of development effort. The GPU architecture is also reported to be used in the next generation Medusa APU line with Zen 6 cores.

In addition, the rumors focus heavily on how AMD will improve its AI and ROCm software suite, inviting Xilinx to directly intervene in this matter. The “Radeon AI” branding is something we could see appearing in GPUs in the future as AMD puts more emphasis on the “AI PC” segment, especially since the main Its competitor NVIDIA announces “RTX” as a PC AI platform.

The launch of RDNA 5 GPUs is still several years away, and around late 2025 or early 2026 it will be clear what AMD is preparing.
