AMD launches FSR 2.0 during the second quarter of the year

After a handful of rumors, AMD has unveiled the next generation of FidelityFX Super Resolution called FSR 2.0, which will be launched during the second quarter of the year.

AMD has unveiled the next big iteration for the FidelityFX Super Resolution. The company’s technology whose goal is to increase performance in games but at the same time provide minimal loss of image quality. This is done by rendering a game in lower resolution than what the monitor uses and then using an algorithm to scale the images again. The technology is similar to AMD’s recently unveiled Radeon Super Resolution but unlike RSR, FSR must be manually implemented in game titles.

The biggest news with FSR 2.0 is that the technology now uses data from previous frames to predict and add details to the current frame. Something AMD believes should increase the image quality for all levels of FSR. According to AMD, it should even be possible for the “Performance” mode in FSR 2.0 to offer the same richness of detail as the “Quality” level in FSR 1.0.

AMD does not mention how many games have been confirmed at the time of writing to implement the new technology. The press material, on the other hand, uses the game title Deathloop in its sample images, so an update to that title is likely to be on the way. However, it remains to be seen which other game engines and game titles implement the technology. AMD aims to launch FSR 2.0 during the second quarter of the year.
