AMD Introduces Most Powerful Mobile Radeon: RX 7900M vs. GeForce RTX 4090 from Nvidia

AMD stated the most powerful mobile Radeon ever. According to the company itself, the new RX 7900M model intended for high-end gaming laptops has only one rival, the GeForce RTX 4090 from competitor Nvidia.

However, the new Radeon already knows how to deal with the GeForce RTX 4080, which is a degree worse. The official numbers show that the RX 7900M is 7% faster on average and has more memory (16 instead of 12 GB). AMD compares game test results at maximum settings at 1440p resolution, mixing games using ray tracing (Nvidia generally leads there) with those running purely on rasterization.

The comparison was made on the new Alienware m18 laptop with Ryzen 9 7945HX, Radeon RX 7900M, 32 GB DDR5-4800, in this configuration it costs $2,800 (CZK 79,000 with VAT). Against him stood the Gigabyte Aorus with Core i7-13700H, RTX 4080, 16 GB DDR5-5200. Both machines ran on Windows 11 and with the latest graphics drivers released at that time.

For AMD, this is the first mobile graphics of the new generation built on a chip other than the Navi 33. It was able to sell it in four different variants. The more powerful Navi 32 hasn’t made it to laptops yet, and the RX 7900M runs on a Navi 31 chiplet GPU, similar to the desktop variants of the RX 7900.

It is closest to the “Chinese” Radeon RX 7900 GRE. It has similar clocks, also a 256-bit bus with 16 GB of video memory, but slightly fewer CUs (72 instead of 80).

AMD does not even indicate that the novelty should appear in a laptop other than the Alienware m18. In the case of dedicated mobile cards, the company is in an extremely difficult position. Finding something other than GeForce in a gaming laptop is a pain in the ass. The statistics also correspond to this.

According to Steam none of the standalone mobile Radeons have more than a 0.15% share. Sales according to the agency Jon Peddie Research in the last quarter then show that 94% of all dedicated GPUs in notebooks are attributable to Nvidia, 3% each to AMD and Intel.
